The Dell Inspiron Mini Nickelodeon Edition Netbook PC

I found the perfect gift for school aged children this year. I actually know many adults that would enjoy this product too. I am one of them!

Dell teamed up with Nickelodeon to create a kid-friendly and kid-ready Inspiron Mini Nickelodeon Edition Netbook PC. This mini netbook performs all of the functions that you would expect out of a standard size laptop. It is decked out with a Nickelodeon theme, from the animated "slimed" start menu to the pre-installed Nick.com desktop gadget. The pre-installed Nick Media software allows you to Stream MP3 songs and advanced screenings of Nick shows (48 hours in advance) on the Nickelodeon broadband media player.

Parents will appreciate the kid friendly features, such as the spill-resistant keyboard. This is a great idea for any laptop keyboard. The Inspiron Mini Nickelodeon Edition Netbook PC is the perfect size (14.37” x 9.45” x 3.74”) for kids that are on the go and weighs less than 3 pounds. The small circle that you see above the screen is a 1.3 megapixel webcam and microphone. My kids have so much fun connecting with their grandmother and aunt via their webcam. They even “call” me when I am in the next room! We installed a free software program, Vid, offered by Logitech that allows users with webcams to communicate with each other through a live video feed.

McAfee SecurityCenter has been pre-installed with Parental Controls that allow you to setup users and their rights. This is great for families that share a computer. You can adjust the settings according to the user. You can also limit the time that your child spends on the Internet by setting up specific days and times that they are allowed to access the Internet. My son was losing sleep by getting up an hour earlier on school days to play computer games. I resolved this by blocking the Internet during the morning hours Monday through Friday. You can also block specific websites and websites by content ratings. While I’m on the topic of security, I was pleased to find out that the Inspiron Mini Nickelodeon Edition Netbook PC comes with one year of a theft recovery service provided by LoJack. If your mini is stolen, LoJack can pin point the physical location of it.

I could only come up with one downfall. The Mini does not come with an integrated CD/DVD drive. But, there are several USB ports. This gives you the option to purchase an external CD/DVD drive, which eliminates the need for a portable personal DVD player when traveling.

The specs on the Inspiron Mini Nickelodeon Edition Netbook PC are excellent for the price and size of this product. It comes with a 160GB hard drive that stores up to 45,000 photos, or up to 39,000 songs, or up to 19 hours of HD video. The Mini also comes with 1GB of memory and is upgradeable to 2GB. The 10.1" display provides 1024 x 600 resolution for an optimal Web browsing experience. Wireless Wi-Fi and wired Ethernet allow you to connect to a broadband modem wirelessly or using the wired 10/100 Ethernet port. We found that the battery life was better than expected. There is a 3-cell rechargeable battery that lasts for more then 3 hours of use. We are able to use our Mini for up to 6 hours before recharging it. The audio speakers that have been built into the system. There are 3 USB ports that you can use to connect devices, such as camera, MP3 players, Flash drives, printers, etc.
