National Grandparents Day - Happy Grandparents Day!

Happy Grandparents Day to all of the special grandparents out there! Did you know that in 1978, the U.S. Congress passed legislation proclaiming the first Sunday after Labor Day as National Grandparents Day? This is an annual celebration that honors grandparents and other seniors and recognizes their contributions to society.

My grandparents are very special to me. I was even fortunate enough to get to know my great grandmother before she passed away when I was a teenager. Unfortunately, I never met my grandfather on my father’s side, but I was loved dearly by my grandmother on his side.

My grandmother on my mother’s side is 80 years young. She is one of my best friends. We talk on the phone almost every night. She stays up late like me, so this is a great time for us to catch up with each other. When my phone rings at 12 or 1am, I can count on it being Grandmom!

She is a great cook. She makes homemade spaghetti sauce and meatballs that are to die for! She wrote her “secret” recipe down for me, but I could never make it like her. So, I decided to watch her make it one day. She puts a dab of this, a pinch of that and a shake of this in everything. Then she tastes it and puts another dab, pinch or shake if needed. It was then that I learned that she does NOT measure! Therefore, I will never master her spaghetti and meatball recipe! I can only use her handwritten recipe as a guide. For now, I’ll just enjoy her spaghetti and meatballs!

My mom plays a huge role in my sons’ lives. They cannot get enough of their Grandma! They have her home, work and cell phone numbers memorized. When her phone rings anytime, day or night, she can count on it being either Alex or David! They call her to find out where she is or what she is doing. If they cannot get in touch with her, they will leave a message on every phone! She comes to all of their sporting events and school events to cheer them on. She plays football, video games, wrestles, travels, rides bikes, skis, swims with them and the list goes on! They love her to pieces! They love their Pop Pop too! He does fun stuff with them like building things and fishing. He even lets them play in the mud!

Be sure to take time out today to honor your grandparents. If you are a grandparent, check out Grandparents.com. They offer online resources for grandparents with their grandkids.

"A Song For Grandma And Grandpa" by Singer/Songwriter Johnny Prill is the official song of National Grandparents Day.
